Whether you’re writing a short story, a memoir, or a novel, you’re telling a story—the basics are the same. Each of these forms needs memorable and relatable people, so you need to shape compelling characters. These characters face some challenges (a tsunami?) or opposing wants (think Harry Potter-Lord Voldemort), thus creating conflict. That conflict needs to be evident to the reader, which is best done with dialogue and actions. Moreover, any story plays out at a specific place (Hogwarts, anyone?), so it needs a vivid setting. And finally, all of these elements need to come together in tight, compelling language. We have to create beauty with words, without compromising the pace or clarity of the story. That comes from editing.
Fret not, for the Himalayan Writing Retreat is coming to Kunzum to help all of you budding writers sharpen your writing tools. Their half-day Creative Writing Workshop will touch upon all of these aspects and help you put them into practice. And, of course, all your pressing questions will be answered in a Q&A session by the instructor.
Speaking of the instructor, Chetan Mahajan is a Penguin-published author, speaker, and writing coach—and also the founder of The Himalayan Writing Retreat, which has been helping scores of aspiring writers and poets achieve their literary dreams since 2016.
Please note that this is a novice-level course open to all writers. A 45-minute lunch break will be given—participants are encouraged to bring their own food. Alternatively, they can order lunch on the spot from any of the eateries close-by.
