Learn Ancient Crafts—Bhil Art, Phad Art, Lippan Kaam, Bengal Pattachitra—at Kunzum Jorbagh with MeMeraki

Good news for all art aficionados and dilettantes! Kunzum Jorbagh will be hosting four in-person art workshops organised by the culture-tech platform, MeMeraki, on Saturday, December 10, at its Jorbagh store. The artforms include Bhil art, Phad art, Bengal Pattachitra, and Lippan kaam. All these workshops will be conducted by masters of the respective crafts who are in town for the day!

For instance, master artist Manoranjan Chitrakar will teach you the basics, history, and common motifs of Bengal Patttachitra painting and help you create a beautiful painting. Manoranjan aka Manu Chitrakar, who has been painting for 30 years since the age of 15, enjoys depicting societal themes in his works. Bengal Pattachitra is a visual and oral art tradition practised by West Bengal’s Patuas or Chitrakars. Though the origins of the Patua tradition have been difficult for art historians to trace, some suggest the oral form dates back to the 10th or 11th century CE.

The Lippan Kaam workshop will be conducted by master artist Nalemitha from Kutch, Gujarat, who has been practising this art for more than 20 years. You will create your own piece with the help of extensive art supplies. In the past, this art was done only on walls by women of the Mutwa community.

Master artist Sher Singh Bhabor will lead the workshop on Bhil painting, and master artist Kalyan Joshi will teach the basics of Phad painting. Kalyan Joshi started learning the artform at the age of eight—from his father Shree Shrilal Joshi, one of the finest Phad artists. Kalyan Joshi’s monochromatic interpretations, collaborations with narrative poetry, and other works have expanded the scope of Phad painting. He received the National Award in 2012 and has also established the “ANKAN” Kala Sansthan.

All the materials for each workshop will be provided at the location, and there’s no extra cost for them. Some of the artists’ artworks will also be on display and available for purchase. Tea and light snacks will be available, and if you are interested in attending more than one workshop on the day, there are dining options close by for lunch. Please note: each workshop has a separate fee and booking link—as given below in the Details section.
