A Note from Ajay Jain
The Kunzum Travel Mag is here. Travellers rejoice!
For four years, we have been on the road writing stories and capturing images – and sharing these with you. Through our blog (www.kunzum.com), in the form of books, through social media, and in person. Nothing comes close to the fun we have had all along.
And now we have a mag too. Always wanted one, but could not figure out the business side of it. Our EUREKA moment finally came, and we did not take long to bring out the first issue of the mag after that. Yes, it is an e-mag. As a PDF (for computers and mobile devices) and for the iPad and the Kindle. To be with you on the go, easily accessible and archived.
What makes our content any special? We bring you first-hand travel accounts, written in an anecdotal style, and illustrated with images. Along the way, you will meet interesting people, get a peep into their cultures and societies, walk through histories, admire landscapes, witness events, connect with Nature’s flora and fauna, embark on road drives, hop on to special trains, feel spiritual and more. Our goal is to prompt you to pack your bags and hit the trail we have been on. As a traveller, not a tourist.
You will notice much of the content is from India and the rest of the subcontinent. This is by design. This is one of the richest regions on the planet for travellers, and yet highly under-reported. In our way, we want to make good this shortfall. To whatever extent possible. One can spend any number of lifetimes travelling but there will still be layers left to peel.
Join us in our journeys. Let us exchange stories. For us, travel is not just a job. It is our philosophy for living. It defines us. It is our identity.
That is why we travel. What do you do?

Congratulations
Congratulations!!
Great.. !!! Go ahead !!!
First of all, great initiative! We strongly believe Indians don’t travel
enough and we support all initiatives which makes them pine to.
Here’s what I think of the magazine. I am being overly critical but at the
teething stage, harsh reviews are better than good ones.
CONTENT
The content is pretty thin. I understand it has been written in first person
mode and is essentially the travelogue of the person who went to a
particular place. However, while the introduction claims (and we all like
to) that this is for travellers and not tourists, there is really not much
that takes you beyond what most tourists do. Take the story on Nagaland, for
example. The places are well known to anyone who has read anything about
Nagaland or has cared to Google it even once. When I pick up the mag from
Kunzum, I expect to go beyond that. Unfortunately, I didn’t. And it was a
bigger disappointment because I actually know how awesome these places are.
And I am sure Ajay and the other writers know that too. It does not
translate into a story on paper though. The story on Ladakh reads like what
a travel agent would talk (and I am saying that despite being one).
All in all, I would expect more in-depth stories. About the people, their
culture, their trials and tribulations, their festivals. About the places
and how various forces have made them what they are. I wouldn’t want to read
what I can read at the many many other publications on Indian tourism. I
would really like something that reads like it did come from a traveller and
not a tourist.
The section on Delhi is what I liked. Brought out aspects that are either
unknown or not really explored properly by Indians.
The feature on Dead Sea stood out like a sore thumb in an otherwise candidly
Indian mag.
I wouldn’t mind if there are fewer but far more well researched stories.
Makes the mag lighter and adds shelf life to it.
PICTURES
The pictures are beautiful. Absolutely fantastic! The pictures alone can
carry this magazine forward even if you don’t write a line of text. I
understand there are issues of size because of high res pictures. Guess you
will just have to find a way to deal with it.
WHAT I LIKE
Each story comes with relevant links on Kunzum about packing, more info,
driving etc. Love that feature.
FORMATTING
There are some proof reading issues (missing brackets). Also, a major miss
one page 18, 3rd line from top in the middle paragraph. Just get it proof
read one additional time for the next issue.
The text also is highly bunched up. Paragraph after paragraph without
spaces. My sense is this was due to size issues (number of pages) but this
is what I have seen. Bunched up text is simply neglected. Pictures are
browsed and end of story. Create smaller sentences. Create spaces between
paragraphs. Give sub topics – it helps the reader to create context. Case in
point – page 8, last column, line 5. The shift is between food and another
‘must visit’ place. But the reader can never guess! He has to actually go
through all of that. Make it easy for them. No one likes to put efforts to
read.
All in all, it’s a commendable effort. Has huge potential. Go deep. Think
hard. Good luck.
Amazing..
Will surely Visit soon!
Congrats!! Ajay.
vanchy
well kudos. the initiative taken is the first step in the long path. i have been reading the reviews posted above and find them pretty interesting… shall try to keep reading what ever comes across from your stable..
your tag line is cool.. "we travel what do you do?"
i am a sort of what you say a professional tourist, with an aim of foot printing at least 100 countries. just touched the three quarter mark of the target..
and regarding a line in the post above that Indians don’t travel enough, it would not be out of place to state that the person who has visited all the countries under the UN and the countries not yet listed is an Indian. he has gone to all the 221 countries.. Mr. Kashi nath samaddar…
any way nice to know such a site exists
