AirPods are one of the most popular true wireless Bluetooth earphones present in the market today. The tiny white earbuds have literally paved the way for true wireless earphones in the tech world and while the industry is divided on their sound quality, most would agree that AirPods are perhaps the most convenient and functional truly wireless earphones present in the market today.
Like most earphones, AirPods obviously are associated with listening to music or taking calls, but there is a rather handy trick hidden up these earbuds’ sleeve that can turn them from earphones to makeshift hearing aids.
That’s right — the AirPods can not only help you hear music or what’s playing on the device you have connected them to, but also help the person who is sitting near you.
The AirPods come with a feature called Live Listen which can turn your earphones into make-do hearing assistants. The feature can not only come in handy for those who have slight hearing difficulties but can also help people communicate better in a noisy space. Imagine being at a busy airport or in a crowded lounge or cafe where having a conversation can be a task.
Well, in such situations, you can turn your AirPods into temporary hearing aids by following these simple steps:
To use the Live Listen feature (or even the AirPods, really), you first need to connect your earbuds to your iPhone. Turn on the Bluetooth on your iPhone, open the lid of the AirPods’ case near the phone. After a couple of seconds, you will get an AirPods’ notification on your iPhone, just tap on the “connect” icon. Your phone will then ask you to hold down the small circular button on the back of the AirPods case after which the earphones will get connected to your smartphone.
Get that Hearing icon
Once you have paired your AirPods with your iPhone, you need to add the the “Hearing” feature to your Control Centre. You can do so by following these simple steps:
Open settings on your iPhone
Scroll down and select Control Centre
Tap on Customise Control icon
Scroll down to “Hearing” option
Tap on the green “+” icon prefixed to the option
Tap the “Hearing” icon in your Control Centre
Once you have added the “Hearing” feature to your Control Centre, you then need to go your Control Centre (on iPhone 8 Plus and earlier devices, you can get to the Control Centre by swiping up from the base of the display. On iPhone X and later, you can get to the Control Centre by swiping down from the top right corner of the display) and tap on the ear icon (which stands for Hearing) present on the bottom right side of your Control Centre.
Turn on the Live Listen mode
Once you tap on the Hearing icon, it will lead you to the Live Listen window. On this window the mode will be off. Tap on the option and the mode will turn on. You can adjust volume in the Live Listen mode by simply altering the volume of your iPhone. And your AirPods will become makeshift hearing aids. Just keep your iPhone near the person whose conversation you need to hear for best results. Believe us, they actually work and are absolute life-savers in noisy areas!
