Selecting a hotel in a big city like London can be a daunting task. There will usually be a compromise – it’s never easy getting the ideal mix of quality, service, features, surrounding landscape, price and location. Dorsett Shepherds Bush may just be what I was looking for, and there are good reasons for it.
1. CHARMINGLY BOUTIQUE
The hotel is big – with 317 rooms – but it does not feel so. It is boutique in its looks and vibe, and charming to say the least.
The rooms are each a work of art, stylishly designed with Chinese influence. The furniture and decor are top grade, feeling fresh and clean and bright and cheerful. The rooms are spacious too – you can stretch your arms without touching the walls. That’s saying a lot for cities like London and for someone with long arms. The showers are luxurious too, and feel very clean – again, not something to be taken for granted even in many expensive hotels.
Other in-room services include unlimited free Wi-Fi, docking station, iron and board, mini bar, safety box, and a big work desk to name just a few.
Not exactly the busy centre of London – it’s actually West London. But bus and London Underground stations are located right outside the hotel to whisk you to any part of the city. You will never feel far from any place. You would roughly be halfway between Heathrow and the central London.
4. SHOPPING & DINING
The Westfield Shopping Centre is located across the street spoiling for you a choice of retail, food and entertainment brands. You can shop and have fun till you drop, walk back to your room, recover, and then be at it again. And within walking distance – along any street that you take – are one mom-and-pop cafe after another for those who love their tea, coffee, cakes, scones and more.
London must be one of the greenest big cities in the world – if not #1 already. But still, not many hotels would overlook expansive gardens. That itself is soothing to the senses when you wake and look out – make sure you ask for a room from where you can see these.
6. FREE CALLING WORLDWIDE
This was a big surprise – all guests are provided a smartphone in their rooms. To make unlimited calls to most countries in the world, and locally too of course. With 4G. Carry it with you wherever you go during your stay. I repeat: it’s free. There are no strings attached.
7. SPA AND GYM
The hotel has a well maintained but modest gym. But that’s fine – most guests would not expect to work out extensively. They would want to do just enough to stay fit and alert. I actually did not see anyone in the gym besides me. For those wanting to unwind, the hotel has a spa too – I figured I would try it on my next visit.
The neighbourhood feels very safe, even at late hours. And despite being on a traffic-laden road, it actually feels very quiet.
P.S. I was not impressed with the breakfast – more like disappointed. Their dinner in Shikumen serving Asian cuisine was tops though.
