Got AirPods? Try These Six Tricks to Get More Out of Them | Tech

AirPods

Apple gave the “true wireless earbuds” market a massive boost when it launched its true wireless earphones, AirPods. True wireless earbuds had existed before AirPods but had never got much attention. That changed with the AirPods. Although they were heavily criticised for their design when they were first launched (they looked like wireless EarPods, according to many), the AirPods have set the standard for all the other true wireless earphones because they are amazingly easy to use and are extremely pocketable. While it may seem like that there is only so much these little white buds can do (there are no buttons at all on them), Apple has packed in a few very subtle but handy features that can make your true wireless life even more easy. So if you have a pair of AirPods, here are six tricks you definitely must try:

Connect them to a non-Apple device
Yes, you heard it right – contrary to what many people think, you can connect your AirPods to a non-Apple device as well. Doing this is the job of that little round button on the back of the AirPod’s case. All you have to do is put your AirPods in their case, open the lid of the case, press the button on the back and hold it till a white light starts flashing between your AirPods in the case. This indicates that your AirPods can now be paired with another device. Find your AirPods in the Bluetooth menu of the device you want to connect them with, select the AirPods and carry on.  Simple!

Swap buds, save battery
Forgot to charge your AirPods for the day and running low on battery? Well, there’s a hack for that — simply use one AirPod at a time while the other one charges, and when you are running out of power on the other one, you can swap it with the charged bud. You also do not have to worry about the microphone as both the AirPods come with a mic if you need to make a call.

Share your music but not your phone calls
With the wire gone, it becomes easier to split AirPods between two people. You can use one earbud while your friend can use the other to listen to the same song. But listening to same music and sharing a phone call are two very different things. Both AirPods have mics, and keeping your friend from responding on a phone call meant for you while you are sharing AirPods may become a problem. Of course, there is a way around – you can easily turn off the mic on one of the AirPods, so while both the people with earbuds can listen to a phone call, only one can speak. To turn one of the mics off, all you have to do is go to settings and tap on Bluetooth. Here you will find a small “i’ icon next to the name of your AirPods. From there select Microphone and turn off the microphone on whichever AirPod you wish.

Set up call announcements
AirPods allow you to take calls without having to use your phone by just double tapping on either of the buds but you STILL have to take your phone out to know exactly who is calling. This can be a tad annoying. To solve this problem all you have to do is set up call announcements on your AirPods. This will announce who is calling you on your AirPods, provided they are on your contacts’ list.  On your iPhone, go to the Settings app and select the Phone option. This will take you to another screen where you need to find the Announce Calls option. Select it and select “Headphones only”, and from thereon you will start getting call announcements on your AirPods as well, letting you know who is calling.

Customise double tap command
Double tapping on the AirPods can activate Siri – almost every AirPod owner knows that. But what many do not know is that they can customise the double tap command and make it perform different tasks other than just waking up Siri. And this is very easy to do as well. All you have to do is go to the Settings app on your connected iPad or iPhone and tap on the Bluetooth option. Find the name of your AirPods in the connected device list and tap the little blue “i” icon next to the name of your AirPods. There you will find a “Double-Tap on AirPod” option which has a list of tasks that your AirPods can perform by double tapping on them – from playing and pausing tracks to going to the next track or going to the previous track. You can even have different tasks for different AirPods.

Change the name of your AirPods
You can hit the same “i” icon in your Bluetooth settings if you wish to change the name of your AirPods. Hitting the icon will take you to a screen where you will find the “Name” option with your existing AirPod’s name written next to it. You can edit and change the name of your AirPods to whatever name you like.

Traveller’s Tip: To find out the battery status of your AirPods as well as its charging case, just place the AirPods in their case and open it, while keeping placed next to the device it is connected to. You will see the battery statistics.
