Day 5: Newcastle – Lake District
A two hour train journey brought me to Penrith in the Lake District, after a change in Carlisle. The ride itself was spectacular through rolling hills with sheep and cows lolling without a care.

Our guide picked me up for a drive through the region. A slight drizzle made the landscape even more spectacular. We stopped to observe people at the Go Ape adventure camp. I wanted to go for a ride in canoes and sailing boats in the lakes along the way – but that was not part of the plan. We did make unscheduled stops at a farm for homemade ice cream followed by tea with, what else, buttered tea cakes.

Check-in was at Sharrow Bay, easily one of the best hotels in the world. Located on the shores of Ullswater and surrounded by mountains all around, you are in a quiet of your own with the nearest commercial activity a few miles away. You want to do little more than smile here lest you wake up the silence or disturb the tranquil waters.
