Setting Sun at the Sam Dunes near Jaisalmer

This image was taken at the Sam (pronounced some) Dunes near Jaisalmer in Rajasthan. See the complete collection on Flickr.

Sam is located about 45 kilometers (28 miles) from Jaisalmer and is quite a popular destination for its sand dunes. Over two dozen camps have come up here offering hotel-style accommodation to tourists in tents and huts complete with attached baths, entertainment and meals.

What did I think of Sam? Nice place but a bit of a let-down. The dunes extend for only a short distance and are not very high. You are promised a one-hour camel safari, but the camels drop you after only 7-8 minutes for you to admire the sunset for the next hour. Bummer. I thought I had signed on for a one hour ride. But it was good fun anyway. You had entertainers to keep you amused, and locals selling soft beverages and packaged snacks to munch. WIsh someone would clear the garbage too.

  1. Hi Ajay,

I really liked your work in the “jaisalmer” series of
    photos.

Please don’t take this the wrong way, but I have a
suggestion. Several of the photos you posted looked
similar to me. My suggestion would be to pick-out your best
and post only a couple of them first. You could save the
rest for uploading later. That way, when someone visits
your photostream they would get a good sampling of your
    work.

    Keep clicking,
    Sandeep

  2. Hi Ajay,

Glad to see your new post and not receive your mail auto reply .hehehe just joking. i completely second you when you say that Sam dunes are breathtaking. I visited jaisalmer and was put up in one of the camps in a tent at 1 degree in Sam for two days. the beauty of the desert is unparallel. Though the camel ride can be bumpy but its worth it. isn’t it?. I would like to say that only in India can you find such diverse natural beauty. The year before last I went to Gulmarg. The farthest my vision could go I could see only snow. And next year I went to Jaisalmer where I was surrounded by only sand. If you ask me to comapre the beauty of both the places I would say its impossible. There is no place like our country. What say Ajay?

  3. Hi Aswini,

I totally agree with you – there is no place like India. That is why I am on a full time mission to cover this country by road and write about it and take photographs too.

Do keep sharing your travel experiences with me.

    Cheers… Ajay

  4. Hi Ajay,

Now that we are on the topic of Rajasthan I saw that surprisingly Jaipur was not on your itinery. I visited Jaipur to bring in New Year 2009. And let me tell you it was one my best holidays. (Can i call that? coz I was there for just 2 days). If you ever get a chance to go there dont miss to do few things:

    1. For once forget about hotels and restaurant. to savour the actual taste of the city eat at the small bhojanalays. A must is the parathas. yummy.
    2. Am sure if you go to Jaipur you cant miss Amer fort. Take my advise go there before you go to anyother tourist spot. the beauty of the fort cannot be expressed in words. Keep atleast 3 hours for Amer.
    3. And of course come what may dont miss Chowki Dhani. Let me not give you any clue as to what it is. You must experience it.
    4. And ofcourse never miss shoping at Johari bazaar. One word of advise again. Bargain as never before.

Hope you go there and as always give us all an account of your expriences.

    Happy travelling.

    Regards,
    Aswini
